Sensofar has started the COMETA project, a fascinating project involving European Union partners

The title shared for this new project is Advanced chemistry and methods to obtain environmental-friendly Cr/P-free conversion COatings on METAls, and it started last December when all participants, including some private companies and research centers, met in Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon facilities near Hamburg as a starting point to greet each other and sync up about everyone’s expectations. Carlos Bermudez, R&D Engineering Manager, and Chaoren Liu, EU Project Associate, will actively participate in this project representing Sensofar.

The main goal of the COMETA project is to find an environmentally friendly way to improve the performance of surfaces of metals like steel and aluminum alloys, which are widely used in the aerospace as well as more general transportation industries. It will focus on discovering high-performance chemical conversion coating through the optimization of the composition and processing conditions for obtaining the desired coating.

All participants in this project have different expertise, which allows having a comprehensive view of achieving the target. With more than 20 years of experience in the optical metrology field, Sensofar will develop a thin film measuring system to be able to characterize the chemical conversion coating. The idea is to control the thickness of the coating, thus controlling the performance of the before mentioned materials.

The total length of this project is expected to be two and a half years. The members will meet periodically to share their progress and define future cooperative strategies together.
